The City Hall on Dam Square was inaugurated in 1655 and was a public building full of references to the independent republic.

On the Dam side above the entrance stands the Virgin of Amsterdam, she looks down at the world at her feet.

In 1808 Louis Napoleon took up residence in the building and had it converted into a palace in Empire style

and the balcony is placed at the front. After the French had withdrawn from the Netherlands, the palace is in use by the royal family.
