The German Johan Friedrich Henkenhaf takes the initiative to realize a hotel opposite the Central Station, which is yet to be built.

To respond to the future influx of tourists who come to visit the city by train, a modern and luxurious hotel must be built.

Henkenhaf has half a million guilders to finance his hotel.

He buys up 17th century buildings on Damrak and Prins Hendrikkade to demolish them and prepare the ground for construction.

Only the properties at numbers 46 and 47 do not want to sell and want a higher offer.

If the negotiations fail, the hotel will be built around the two buildings.

On August 19, 1890, the Victoria Hotel on Damrak was festively opened.
