The association of the Amsterdam domestic science school was founded in 1891 by Lady J. de Bosch Kemper and H. Scholten Commelin.

The development of female education and the economic independence of women was central.

The school was built in 1887 on the edge of the Vondelpark by architect C.B. Postumus Meyjes (1858-1927).

Who in 1884 had also built the head office of the Dutch Iron Railway company, the "Droogbak".

The school is built in the Chalet style, a popular 19th century romantic architectural style, incorporating elements

of traditional Swiss farmhouse architecture, reminiscent of unspoilt Swiss mountain life. Characteristic are, for example,

the wooden balconies and the overhanging roof molding. The Nieuwe Huishoudschool was closed in 1970 and converted into a youth hostel in 1975.
