London Police

Amsterdam Atlas

collage: 9 photos

format: 150 x 150 cm

Prinsengracht number 70 was built in 1741 as a residential house with retail space.
In 1950, the adjacent building at number 68 was demolished and a pot house
(a small low building usually used as a workshop or storage space) was built.
After the pot house was demolished, a small garden was created that was mainly used
as a public toilet, a collection point for waste and the blank wall for graffiti.
Due to the nuisance, the property owner and the adjacent gallery owner
decided to ask the artist collective the 'London Police' to make a mural.
Chaz Barrison (1974) and Bob Gibson (1977), best known for their LADs (laughing figures),
started the 'London Police' in 1998.
In addition to the five LADs, the mural also depicts the two artists in a kind of vehicle.
The municipality did not appreciate the damage to the monumental building and
Bureau Monuments and Archeology wanted to have the mural removed.
After protests from residents, the mural was allowed to remain.
