Theo van gogh

Amsterdam Atlas

collage: 9 photos

format: 80 x 80 cm

Theo van Gogh (1957-2004) – director, interviewer and columnist –
was murdered on November 2, 2004 by a young Muslim fundamentalist.
I remember Theo van Gogh cycling through the city; his large stature
made it look like he was riding a bicycle that was too small.
I miss his appearance on TV, “een “prettig gesprek”
was one of the most beautiful interview programs.
I miss his vision of society, his rowdy, provocative, satirical, riotous,
harassing and hurtful opinion. I miss the counter-narrative.
The artist Jeroen Henneman (1942) designed the sculpture The Scream,
which was unveiled on March 19, 2007 in the Oosterpark,
close to the place where Theo van Gogh was murdered.
The 4.5 meter high statue represents freedom of expression.
