Plans for a tunnel from the city center to Amsterdam North were made as early as 1850.
Ir. WC. Brade (1791-1858) designed a cast iron tunnel between Nieuwebrugsteeg and Tolhuis in Noord.
Many years and designs later, the IJ tunnel would be opened in 1968.
The tunnel consists of nine concrete tunnel segments of approximately 90 meters long.
The lowest point of the tunnel is 20.23 meters below sea level.
The total length of the tunnel is 1.682 meters and the closed part is 1.039 meters long.
Two ventilation buildings on both banks provide air supply.
At the top of the center side of the tunnel, the Nemo science and technology museum
was opened in 1997 (see Panurbana 016).
The architect Renzo Piano suggests that the shape of the building is a movement upwards
towards the light, which is a counterpart to the tunnel that plunges into darkness.
